Public HBCUs Get The Edge In New Technology
Now more than ever we are searching for innovative ways to save our planet; globally, nationally and locally. Our public HBCUs are no exception, and have been making strides in areas of research like energy and climate change. Last month North Carolina A&T; Greensboro, NC and Texas Southern University; Houston, Texas embarked on major projects in new technology.
A&T received $900,000 to work toward predicting changes and patterns in weather, and making better decisions about regions targeted by specific weather systems. The National Science Foundation’s 10 million dollar Expeditions in Computing grant, entitled “Understanding Climate Change: A Data-Driven Approach” will last for five years. Of the five schools participating, North Carolina A&T is the only HBCU.
In Texas, Evolution Solar Corporation began installation of eight photovoltaic panels on TSU’s campus in the hopes of fostering a solar initiative. The installation will enlist the help of the students as well, broadening their knowledge of solar technology.
These opportunities in research are invaluable as we move toward a sustainable society. The frontier of green collar careers is just around the corner, and providing our students with hands on access to these fields gives them leverage in the 21st century job market.
